Venus in 1998
by Rae McKinley

I am maybe only partly hip and waist and thigh
but more so tempting men with the yearning in my eyes.
I am infinitely more flesh than bone
and more fantasy than men have nights to dream
I am love,
lover,
temptress,
mistress.
I am sister,
daughter,
mother,
pain.

I am maybe mostly broken hearts that conjure me with tears.
but more so estrogen incarnate drowning in fallopian cesspools.
I am the birth of all things of man with the world dripping from my lips.
I am untouchable goddess wrapped in bloodstained sheets.
I am virgin,
matron,
wife
and whore.
I am yielding,
stopping,
stealing
falling on my knees.

I am a little dangerous when you have me on my back,
but at my best when you are pinned inside of me.
I reveal the madness in men's hearts, the tragedy in their souls,
covet every jaded word, limb, misogynist thought.
I am destroyer,
upheaval,
defiler,
dream stealer.
I am raving lunacy,
growing sane in a crazy world,
I am kin to Pandora
and dead to Zeus.

I am banished from Eden and whiplashed Saturday night.
And I am new age Madonna without immaculate deception.
I am killer bees,
dairy queens,
Delilah's cries,
every woman, every man

I am Venus for 1998.
